Security Evaluation

1. Device Security

Criterion Value Proof Comment
Known hardware tampering None πŸ”— Proof No publicly confirmed hardware tampering incident specifically affecting the AXIS P1486-LE was established in the reviewed sources as of October 24, 2026. The camera provides IK10 impact resistance, secure boot and hardware-based key protection through Axis Edge Vault. These features do not establish complete resistance to deliberate physical tampering.
Known vulnerabilities None πŸ”— Proof No confirmed vulnerability specifically attributed to the AXIS P1486-LE was established in the reviewed sources. Axis publishes security advisories and firmware updates for AXIS OS. Vulnerabilities affecting shared operating system components must also be considered. The absence of a model-specific advisory does not prove that the device is vulnerability-free.
Prior attacks None πŸ”— Proof No publicly confirmed cyberattack specifically targeting the AXIS P1486-LE was established in the reviewed sources as of October 24, 2026. The camera provides network video streaming, administrative management and analytics services that may represent attack surfaces if improperly configured. Appropriate network security controls are required.
Updatability Very common πŸ”— Proof The AXIS P1486-LE supports firmware updates through its web administration interface and AXIS Device Manager. Administrators can install new AXIS OS releases containing bug fixes, security updates and functional improvements. Signed firmware and secure boot help protect device software integrity.
Category Score Score: 1 / 3

2. System Security

Criterion Value Proof Comment
Authentication with other systems Full πŸ”— Proof AXIS OS supports authenticated device administration, local user accounts and certificate-based security mechanisms. The camera can be integrated into compatible video management systems through authenticated network services. Axis Edge Vault provides hardware-backed protection of cryptographic credentials. Authentication of individual integrations depends on the configured protocols.
Communications Encrypted with up-to-date encryption πŸ”— Proof The AXIS P1486-LE supports HTTPS for encrypted web administration and secure network communication mechanisms provided by AXIS OS. The device documentation states that HTTPS is enabled by default for sensitive configuration and password operations. Secure video transport can be configured using supported encrypted streaming protocols. The classification assumes that unencrypted alternatives are restricted.
Storage Encrypted with up-to-date encryption πŸ”— Proof https://help.axis.com/en-us/axis-os-hardening-guide
Category Score Score: 1 / 3

3. User Authentication

Criterion Value Proof Comment
Account management Full πŸ”— Proof AXIS OS provides local user and administrator account management. Administrators can configure access permissions, create user accounts and manage authentication settings through the device interface. The system also supports integration with compatible centralized management platforms for network surveillance deployments.
Authentication Secure πŸ”— Proof The AXIS P1486-LE requires administrator account configuration during initial setup and supports password-protected management access. HTTPS is enabled by default to protect sensitive administrative communication. Axis Edge Vault provides hardware-backed cryptographic key protection, supporting the security of authenticated services.
Brute-force protection Exist πŸ”— Proof AXIS OS provides brute-force delay protection against repeated unauthorized authentication attempts. This protection is enabled by default in AXIS OS 11.5 and later. It identifies excessive password-guessing requests and temporarily blocks the originating network client. Administrators can configure the protection thresholds according to deployment requirements.
Event logging Access event logged πŸ”— Proof AXIS OS supports security-related event logging and persistent audit logging on supported firmware versions. AXIS OS 12.5 and later provides persistent security audit logs that can record authentication events and relevant account security activities. The Full logging classification is conditional on the camera running a compatible firmware version with the documented audit logging functionality.
Passwords Require change after setup with complexity requirements πŸ”— Proof The AXIS P1486-LE requires an administrator account and password to be configured during initial setup. The manufacturer recommends using passwords containing at least eight characters and changing passwords periodically. The camera documentation explicitly states that Axis devices do not enforce a password policy, so mandatory complexity requirements cannot be assumed. This classification approximates secure initial credential setup rather than a mandatory password change after setup.
Category Score Score: 1 / 3

The AXIS P1486-LE Global Shutter Camera is an industrial network surveillance camera developed by Axis Communications, a Canon Group company. It was officially announced on January 12, 2026.

The camera is designed for high-speed traffic surveillance, vehicle monitoring and license plate capture. It uses a 1/1.8-inch CMOS global shutter image sensor, providing a maximum resolution of 2048 Γ— 1536 pixels and frame rates of up to 270 frames per second.

The device uses the Axis ARTPEC-9 system-on-chip and incorporates advanced edge-based AI analytics, including AXIS Object Analytics and AXIS Image Health Analytics.

Optical features include a 10–40 mm varifocal lens, 4Γ— optical zoom, built-in continuous and strobing infrared illumination, electronic image stabilization and Forensic Wide Dynamic Range.

The camera is suitable for demanding outdoor environments, with IP66/IP67 protection, IK10 impact resistance and an operating temperature range of -40Β°C to 60Β°C.

It supports wired Ethernet connectivity, Power over Ethernet, local microSD recording, external I/O connections and integration with compatible video management systems.

The AXIS P1486-LE runs AXIS OS and incorporates Axis Edge Vault hardware-based cybersecurity features. Security capabilities include secure boot, signed operating system images and a Secure Element with CC EAL6+ and FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certification.

The device supports administrator authentication, HTTPS-protected management, secure network integration, firmware updates and configurable local storage protection.

AXIS OS also provides brute-force delay protection, enabled by default in AXIS OS 11.5 and later. Persistent security audit logging is available on compatible firmware versions.

This preliminary IDRS assessment was prepared using official Axis product documentation and AXIS OS security guidance reviewed as of October 24, 2026.

No publicly confirmed model-specific hardware tampering incidents, vulnerabilities or targeted cyberattacks were established in the reviewed sources. The absence of published reports does not demonstrate that the product is immune to security threats.

Storage encryption, comprehensive audit logging and the security of individual network integrations depend on the installed firmware and deployed configuration.

Additional validation is required before assigning an unconditional final security grade.
