No public teardown or dedicated hardware-tampering CVE specific to iota is on record; the disclosed Talos/Bitdefender findings are software (web/XCMD command injection), not physical tampering. Physical attack surface exists but is bounded.

Twenty-plus CVEs were published against iota firmware 6.9X/6.9Z by Cisco Talos (Oct 2022) and Bitdefender, including unauthenticated OS command injection (CVE-2022-33192, CVE-2022-33204..33207, CVE-2022-33194/33195) and format-string injection (CVE-2022-35244, CVE-2022-35874..35889, CVE-2022-33938), several at CVSS 9.8β10.0. These are model-specific iota CVEs; Abode shipped firmware fixes after disclosure.
| Prior attacks
Rare
π Proof
The disclosed iota vulnerabilities were found by coordinated academic/vendor research (Cisco Talos, Bitdefender) and patched before public mass exploitation; no in-the-wild botnet, mass compromise or criminal campaign is publicly attributed to iota. Prior attacks is platform-level research history, not a confirmed victim record.

After the Oct 2022 Talos disclosure, Abode released patched firmware for iota 6.9X/6.9Z; the gateway receives OTA firmware updates through the Abode cloud while online, and the company continues to ship security maintenance for the platform.

iota is HomeKit-certified (Apple HomeKit Accessory Protocol with cryptographic pairing), binds to an Abode cloud account, and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant through authenticated cloud channels; Z-Wave/Zigbee child devices join the hub via standard inclusion. The assessed profile uses HomeKit + Abode cloud pairing, which provides per-platform mutual authentication.
| Communications
No encryption
[3] π Proof
Although Abode markets AES-256 encryption for cloud/video, Talos and Bitdefender documented that iota's local web interface (/action/wirelessConnect, XCMD endpoints) listens on plaintext HTTP and accepts unauthenticated configuration commands. Per WikiIoT rule, the existence of a plaintext LAN path downgrades the communications rating to No encryption rather than assuming TLS-only.
| Storage
No encryption
π Proof
Abode markets "AES256 bit encryption" for video/comm channel, but does not publish a per-partition flash encryption claim (e.g. dm-crypt/AES-XTS on the rootfs or config partition) for iota's internal storage. Per WikiIoT rule, an undocumented local-flash encryption state is rated No encryption.

| Account management

The Abode app supports multiple user/guest access codes, shared-family invitations, per-device permission management, event timeline review and remote device removal, mapping to Full account management.
| Authentication
Basic
π Proof
Cloud/app access is via Abode account sign-in; the assessed profile does not enable optional 2FA on the Abode account. On the local LAN, Talos documented that the web/XCMD endpoints accept unauthenticated HTTP requests, which means the device itself does not enforce strong authentication at the local interface. Rated Basic rather than Secure.
| Brute-force protection
Absent
[4] π Proof
Talos documented that the local web interface and XCMD console accept commands without any authentication prompt, so there is no password lockout, rate-limit or brute-force protection to bypass at the device level. Cloud-side account throttling exists but the assessed local attack surface has no brute-force protection. Rated Absent.
| Event logging
Access event logged
π Proof
The Abode app records a timestamped event timeline (arm/disarm, sensor triggers, camera clips, user access codes) that the owner can review; professional-monitoring plans add a longer retention window.
| Passwords
Require change after setup
π Proof
Setup requires creating a new Abode account (or signing into an existing one) and enrolling user access codes in the app; no universal hard-coded default password for the iota gateway itself is documented. The device does not enforce a separate on-device PIN complexity policy beyond the Abode account password. Rated Require change after setup.

Documentation-based security assessment: Abode iota All-in-One Security Kit. Reviewed 2026-10-24.
Documentation-based assessment of a defined Abode profile. The gateway is set up through the Abode app on iOS/Android and bound to a single Abode cloud account; the account uses a self-chosen password but optional 2FA is not enabled in this profile. HomeKit pairing is used (iota is HomeKit-certified), and the device integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant through the Abode cloud. The default Abode-app-to-cloud TLS channel is used for remote control, but the assessed profile also has the documented local web/XCMD interface exposed on the LAN. Power is wall-plug DC with internal battery backup; firmware receives OTA updates through the Abode cloud, including the patches released after the Oct 2022 Talos disclosure. These are the explicitly selected conditions of this document assessment, not a claim about factory defaults or an inspected physical unit.
Ratings map documented capabilities and the stated configuration to WikiIoT choices. Rare is a qualitative assessment of documented bounded exposure/history, not a measured frequency. Prior attacks is explicitly platform/research-level history; the cited CVEs were disclosed by coordinated vendor research (Cisco Talos, Bitdefender) and patched before public mass exploitation, and do not represent confirmed in-the-wild attacks on iota owners. Optional capabilities (e.g. 2FA, professional monitoring retention) are not treated as enabled unless the assessment configuration states so. Historical CVEs do not imply that the selected current firmware remains vulnerable.
Release-date scope: 2018-11-19, the date stated in the body of the official Abode blog post announcing iota pre-orders; shipping began mid-December 2018. Not asserted to be the earliest worldwide retail date.
Historical vulnerability: A coordinated Cisco Talos disclosure (Oct 2022) plus a Bitdefender research whitepaper documented twenty-plus CVEs against Abode iota firmware 6.9X and 6.9Z, including unauthenticated OS command injection via the web interface /action/wirelessConnect and XCMD endpoints (CVE-2022-33192, CVE-2022-33204, CVE-2022-33205, CVE-2022-33206, CVE-2022-33207, CVE-2022-33194, CVE-2022-33195) and format-string injection in XCMD testWifiAP, getVarHA, ghome_process_control_packet and UPnP logging (CVE-2022-35244, CVE-2022-35874, CVE-2022-35875, CVE-2022-35876, CVE-2022-35877, CVE-2022-35878, CVE-2022-35879, CVE-2022-35880, CVE-2022-35881, CVE-2022-35884, CVE-2022-35885, CVE-2022-35886, CVE-2022-35887, CVE-2022-33938), several at CVSS 9.8-10.0. Affected firmware: 6.9X and 6.9Z; Abode released patched firmware after disclosure.
No physical device was tested. Keep the configuration and evidence scope with the ratings.
